What it means
Your utility wants proof the valve still works
A backflow preventer is the valve that stops water in your irrigation or fire line from flowing backwards into the drinking water main. Florida utilities require it to be tested once a year by a certified tester, and they need the result on file.
Most utilities send that reminder by text now — some still mail a letter or email it. However it arrived, it is not a sales pitch and it is not a scam. Ignore it long enough and utilities can charge a penalty or shut the meter off, so it is worth handling. It is also a small job, not an emergency.
A typical residential test takes about twenty minutes and you do not need to be home. If the assembly fails, we tell you what it needs and what it costs before we touch it.
